Other than that, some manufacturers also install traction control systems to provide better acceleration.
By knowing all these, individuals can properly choose the right off-road bike that can provide them with the features they need when riding on the road. Click here for more.
We have a proud car culture in the United States but, surprisingly, not many people know too much about this country’s automotive history. For this history lesson, we are focusing on the automotive “industry” rather than the history of the automobile itself.
When It All Began
In the 1890s, the American automotive industry began and, thanks to the use of mass-production and the large size of the domestic market, quickly evolved into the largest automotive industry in the world (though this title would be taken from the U.S. by Japan in the 1980s and then from Japan by China in 2008).
The U.S. motor vehicle industry actually started with hundreds of manufacturers, but by the end of the 1920s, three companies stood apart from the rest:
- General Motors
The Big Three
These three companies continued to prosper, even after the Great Depression and World War II. Henry Ford began building cars back in 1896 and started the Ford-Motor Company in 1903. Ford utilized the first conveyor belt-based assembly line in 1913, improving mass production of its Model T. The assembly line decreased costs significantly and the Model T sold so well that it propelled Ford into the largest automobile company in the U.S.
General Motors was founded by William Durant (formerly a carriage maker)n in 1908. In the first couple of years, GM acquired Buick, Oldsmobile, Oakland (later to become Pontiac), Cadillac, and a number of other car companies. Durant also wanted to acquire Ford but Henry Ford opted to keep his company independent. Having become a little to “acquisition-happy,” Durant over-extended the company and was forced out by a group of banks who took controlling interest in the company. Durant then teamed up with Louis Chevrolet and founded Chevrolet in 1913, which became a quick success. Durant retook majority control in GM after acquiring enough stock and GM acquired Chevrolet in 1917. This did not last long, however. Durant was forced out again in 1921. In the late 1920s, GM overtook Ford as the largest automaker.
The former president of Buick and a former executive of GM, Walter Chrysler took control of the Maxwell Motor Company in 1920, revamped it, and reorganized it into Chrysler Corporation in 1925. Chrysler acquired Dodge Brothers in 1927 and, in 1928, introduced the DeSoto and Plymouth brands thanks to the dealer network and manufacturing facilities that came with the Dodge acquisition. By the 1930s, Chrysler overtook Ford and became the second largest automaker.
1950s and Beyond
By 1950, America produced almost 75 percent of all automobiles in the world. At the start of the 1970s, however, U.S. auto companies (especially the Big Three) were severely affected by increased competition from foreign auto manufacturers and high oil prices. In subsequent years, companies bounced back occasionally but the crisis reached its pinnacle in 2008, prompting Chrysler and General Motors to file for bankruptcy reorganization and be bailed out by the federal government. While Ford was also affected by the crisis, it decided to power through on its own and did not take the bail out. We actually have a lot of respect for Ford as a result of this. They did not take the easy way out.
The year 2014 saw saw the biggest (seasonally adjusted annualized) sales in history with 16.98 million vehicles.

If you are selling the car, you need to get in touch with Department of Motor Vehicles and make sure that title is transferred as well.
Engine sludge formation. Here is how it gets in your motor. And a new, inexpensive way to remove sludge without the need to take your motor apart.
When your car is about 4 years old and older. When your car’s odometer miles run pass 75,000 miles, sticky residues; leftovers from pass oil changes, begin to build faster and gum-up your motors piston rings. Your motors dirty piston rings are the primary cause of sludge formation. It happens in this way.
Your motor’s pistons have 3, 1/8 inch thick flexible, bracelet-like rings that have a springy nature to them. This keeps them ever expanding outward to provide blockage to keep your motor oil from escaping into the combustion cycle. And keep your fuels combustion gases totally above the piston. Its all needed to push your piston down, spinning gears, and wheels to propel you forward with zip and ease. Sludge begins when…
Engine sludge formation occurs when your piston rings allows those1500 degree combustion gases to slip pass them. This happens when dirty piston ring flexing outward action is slowed or reduced. A gap appears and with each burst of new combustion, little puffs of combustion escape pass your pistons and mix with your motor oil.
Well anyhow, there is always some escape of combustion, called blowby by us mechanics, even when your pistons rings work perfectly well. When rings and cylinder wear spaces allow more combustion to escape, you sludge your motor oil in a month of driving and you, by motor design vent it to the outside world. That is no good for air, water, old folks and children with breathing problems.
To prevent your cars heavily loaded combustion gases; containing a handful of suphurs, 5 gallons of raw gas, carbon black, and dozens of other negatives from being dumped into the air every 3000 miles of driving, a device is made to block its escape. Instead it is channel back into the combustion process. This is done by a thumb size check valve and hoses in a new motor sub-system called the positive crankcase ventilation system.
The positive crankcase ventilation system is overpowered by all that sticky, hot blowby and soon chokes down the blowby flow. When that happens sludge formation goes bonkers, like kids during their first year on the loose at college. Kids party. Sludge forms a 1/4 inch layer over every part. Kids know better. your motor does not!
The fix: Soon, your car starts losing its zip. It may consume motor oil. It may tap. Your exhaust smells worst than than your kids tennis after soccer practice. Friction wear is now running rampant. The usual fix is an overhaul at $3000 or more. Or a partial cleaning called an engine valve repair at up to $2000 in cost. Its a nasty, time consuming job to take apart and clean every part.
Engine Flushing. You may have read about all kinds of flushing methods from stepping on two frogs, to putting automatic transmission fluid and solvent in your motor to clean out the sludge. parts stores even sell engine flushes, which are solvents to do the job.
The bad thing about solvent motor flushes is they strip your pistons, bearings, valves, and gears of their vital oil lube film as they rinse away the sludge. And some of that sludge, during circulation, reform in all the wrong places. Usually blocking your motor’s oil pump pickup screen. About a week of driving after such a cleaning, your motor goes in convulsions. The mechanic say, in diagnosis,”It’s shot!”
New products to safely remove sludge using anti-wear cleaners are what is needed, if engine sludge is your motor’s problem. A leader in the field for internal engine cleaning and sludge removal with engine restorative ingredients is Mega Power. The Mega Power Sludge Removing Worn Motor Treatment is fast, and takes less than a hour. Mega Power is safe because it has friction reducers that lube even without the presence of oil. and it removes sludge over a 6000 miles time span. Instant restorative power results. Cost is under $100 – not $3000. And you can install the treatment yourself. Nothing to take apart. Driving does the cleaning. You can learn more and get ordering info at:
Car air conditioning systems that blow warm on one side and cold on the other side usually have one of two problems. In this short auto repair article, a master automotive technician shares his experience, derived from working on air conditioners in Florida for the last couple of decades. This free information can be equally helpful to the do-it-yourselfer as it is to a consumer that knows the value of being informed when it comes to dealing with car repair shops. Read on for free car A/C help when the air is blowing warm on ONE side.
Usually cars that blow cold on one side of the dash and warm on the other side, are typically equipped with a dual zone climate control system. Dual zone systems allow the driver and front passenger to adjust respective temperatures to their comfort levels. There are two common causes of a temperature difference when both sides are set at the coldest settings, lets cover the first one.
Automotive air conditioners which use 134A, usually hold a small amount of refrigerant compared to older automobiles that use R12. Car and truck air conditioners today are much more efficient than their older counter parts. The fact that 134A systems use less freon, means that a leak can more quickly affect the performance of an HVAC (Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning) system. Due to the design of dual AC systems, low refrigerant is the leading cause of drastic temperature difference from one side of the dash to the other. Even well experienced car mechanics may be surprised to learn that as little as 4 to 8 ounces undercharged of 134A can make such a huge difference. The temperature from the left vent to the right vent can vary 10 to 20 degrees. The easiest thing to try is to top off the system or better yet, remove all freon and recharge the unit with the factory specified amount. In most cases after the proper charge of Freon is in the car, the temp will blow equally as cold like it should on BOTH sides!
What if that didn’t help? Read on to learn of another possible cause of the problem.
HVAC Door Issue
Dual zones supplying different temperatures from vents on either side of the dash is achieved by the use of small doors within the HVAC housing. By controlling the doors, the temperature of the air on the left and right can be adjusted to the desired comfort level. Many times the motor (or actuator) that controls the door for either side can fail or the door itself can break and prevent the temp. from being adjusted. Diagnosing this problem is more complex and can be a subject for another article. Thanks for reading. Hopefully, the free information provided here will help to remedy the problem of “AC’s blowing hot or warm from one side of the dash.”
The Hero Honda Karizma Fi is one bike that is set to rule the high end Indian bike market. Hero Honda is the biggest Indian bike manufacturer and there is no doubt that their flagship model Karizma needs an upgrade to Fi engine. College guys have improved their student status, high end bikers have relished it revving to high RPMs and office commuters have enjoyed its smooth engine for long rides.
Karizma is a great bike, I have been riding it for several years. I have used it on long roads and also city traffic. The new Karizma Fi will be a performance uplift for the hard earned brand. Hero Honda would have paid a huge sum to its brand ambassador whom we see often in the ads.
Fi engine has been featured lately in bikes such as Pulsar 220, Apache RTR and Glamour. Eventhough the engine capacity is the same, the ignition and fuel flow makes a difference. This technology gives better pickup and more mileage because the fuel is burned effectively without any wastage.
If you are planning to buy Pulsar 220 or the Yamaha R15, you may want to wait for the Karizma Fi 223cc bike to show up in the markets. Visit your local city showroom or subscribe to one of the bike news blogs to stay informed about the launch. Go and grab a test drive as soon as it shows up. I guarantee that Hero Honda will not disappoint you with the Karizma Fi, they definitely cannot sit and watch the sales figures hit the roof tops for Yamaha and Bajaj.
The seemingly never-ending rise in car insurance prices could be coming to a screeching stop thanks to proposed government changes.
New proposals will see a huge U-turn on the rate at which payouts for victims of serious accidents is calculated which is known as the Ogden rate.
The Ogden rate is set to be changed as soon as next year in a bid to provide a “fairer” system.
How does the Ogden rate work?
Set by the government, the Ogden rate is the amount awarded to victims with life-changing injuries after an accident.
The rate had been set at 2.5% which meant that for every £1,000 awarded to a victim in a claim, the insurer would pay out £975 – with the other 2.5% or the Ogden rate expected to be earned by the claimant through investment interest. This would then give them the full pay out they were due.
In March 2017, the rate was cut to -0.75% or in a monetary sense, insurers would now have to pay victims £1,007.50 per £1,000 payment.
It was this increase in pay outs that helped cause car insurance prices to hit record highs* in the last 12 months.
What’s the latest Ogden rate change?
While a specific date hasn’t been announced, the Ministry of Justice have confirmed that they are revising the rules and it’s expected that the Ogden rate will be put at 1% from next year.
The changes have been welcomed by insurers as it will reduce the amount they are forced to pay.
Huw Evans of the Association of British Insurers commented on the proposed changes:
“This is a welcome reform proposal to deliver a personal injury discount rate that is fairer for claimants, customers and taxpayers alike.”
“If implemented it will help relieve some of the cost pressures on motor and liability insurance in a way that can only benefit customers.”
What do these changes mean for drivers?
The last time rates changed it meant an increase in car insurance premiums as insurers passed on the extra costs to drivers.
Now with pay-outs to victims expect to drop, it only makes sense that the savings will be passed on to drivers by reducing the overall cost of their cover.
Changes are not expected to come into effect until next year so it may be some time before these savings can actually be seen on the price of annual insurance.
How will it affect accident victims?
While it’s potentially good news drivers, victims of serious accidents who are left with life changing injuries could be short changed.
Instead of receiving the full amount of the awarded pay-out, victims will now once again be expected to invest their money for profit.
While the assumption is that these people will be able to make up the difference comfortably, many have commentated on the unfairness of the new rate.
Speaking to The Mirror, President of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers, Brett Dixon said:
“Someone with a life-long, life-changing injury such as brain damage or a spinal injury cannot afford to take any risks with how his compensation is invested,”
“The last thing people with devastating injuries think about when they are lying in a hospital is their insurance premiums. They think about how they are going to manage. Insurers say an increased discount rate will benefit customers through their premiums. It is of no benefit if they are severely injured and forced to take risks with the compensation they so desperately need.”
4 ways to reduce the cost of your car insurance
While you wait for rate changes to bring the cost of you cover down, there are a number of ways you can save yourself money right now.
Reduce your risk
While there are some details you can’t change, there are a few things you can do to reduce the risk you pose. Something as simple as changing your job title from an office manager to an office administrator could save you money.
You also need to consider the vehicle you’re driving. When choosing a car, you should try and get one that’s safer, slower and less eye-catching.
Increase your excess
Increasing the amount you’re willing to pay if you have an accident will reduce the price of your premium. This is a great way to reduce the overall cost but remember you should never agree to an excess that you can’t afford to pay.
Make sure your car is secure
Whether it’s adding an immobiliser to your car or locking it away in a garage overnight, increasing your vehicles security will make it less attractive to thieves and cut the cost of your cover.
Make sure you let your insurer know about your improved security as some providers will offer discounts even before you renew.
Only pay for the cover you need
If you’re only borrowing a car or just need to drive for a few days, an annual insurance policy could be a huge waste of money.
A temporary policy offers the same level of cover and financial protection as yearly insurance at a fraction of the price.
You get the cover you want without having to pay for insurance you don’t need. You can get a range of quotes in minutes and compare prices to save time and money.
We all need to be able to get a hold of car parts at one time or another. Whether you work on your own car or you are a professional mechanic, it is essential to be able to get a hold of the parts that you need when you need them. Of course, brand new car parts can end up being rather expensive, and that is why it is usually a good idea to look for used or re-engineered car parts in order to save a little bit of money. The benefit of using re-engineered car parts is the fact that you will not only be able to get them at a discounted price, but they will also likely be of a better quality than your typical used car parts because of the fact that they have been re-engineered.
If you are a professional mechanic, then you always want to be sure that you give your customers the best quality service at the lowest possible price. This means that whatever parts are needed in order for you to be able to fix your car, you need to be able to find affordable prices for your customers. They are already paying you for your labor, and so adding expensive parts on top of their bill will just cause them an even bigger hassle. Because you care about your customers and you want them to return to you whenever they need help with their cars, it is essential that you do whatever you can in order to provide them with the lowest possible rates.
Of course, if you give them cheap service with cheap parts and they end up continuing to have problems, they are also not likely to return to you for service on their car if they feel as though you did not do a good job or you installed faulty parts on their car. This is why re-engineered car parts are the best of both worlds. You can not only provide excellent prices to your customers in order to undercut the competition, but you can also give them high quality parts so that they will be set for a long time. The less a customer has to go back to a mechanic, the more likely they will be to trust the mechanic.
If you run your own shop, or if you just work on cars in your spare time for a little extra money, being able to provide high quality, affordable parts to your customers is essential to gaining returning business. Even if you just work on your own vehicles, being able to save money on good parts is definitely a plus. The best thing that one can do is to search the internet in order to find the best quality at the most affordable prices. If you can do that, both you and your customers will end up being happy. After all, any business is about providing the best services that you possibly can.

Most people operate with the general understanding that they need to get their car washed regularly in order to keep the exterior looking nice. Not only that, but regular car washes help maintain your car’s paint job. Now, if the outside of your car looks great, so should the inside. As much as it may look brand new, a dirty engine can make your car run like an antique. Never fear! You can actually clean your own car’s engine, as long as you don’t mind getting a little dirty. It really isn’t as difficult as it may seem…
First Things First
You can’t just jump in and hose down your engine. That could be quite dangerous, in fact (think exposed wires). First, you will need to clear out as much of the debris as possible. Thing like leaves and twigs can get stuck in the grill, hood (especially around the seams), and vents. An air compressor is ideal to use as it will just blow away the debris, but it’s not something in most people’s garages. No air compressor? No worries! A small brush will do.
Remember what we said about hosing down your engine being dangerous? Well, here’s why… sensors, exposed wiring, distributor, spark plug openings. These cannot be exposed to water without some kind of protection. Your engine is more or less waterproof already (think rain), but wrapping the sensors and such in plastic will ensure it.
This is a simple one… start your engine and let it run for about 10 minutes. The accumulated grease and oil stuck on the engine will loosen up, and degreasers work much better with a warm engine. Speaking of which…
Getting rid of the gunk built up in your engine requires a degreasing product. While petroleum based degreasers are efficient, they can also degrade rubber hoses and seals. You should get something with a gentler touch, something water or even citrus-based. It’s best to apply a degreaser from the bottom up. Otherwise, it can drip down on you as you work. Please take care as the degreaser can remove the wax from your fenders. Spray carefully, and hose down your fenders, grill, and hood afterward.
How Bad is It?
Now, if your engine is basically clean, just let the degreaser sit for 3-5 minutes. If there is a lot of build up in your engine, you may need to take a parts brush to break up the gunk. A little car washing solution can help. Actually, if I’m being totally honest here, Dawn (as in dishwash soap) works pretty darn well. It is a degreaser itself, so it can help you get those heavily soiled spots loosened up. Just don’t use too much. Your car’s engine will turn into a bubble bath when you hose it down.
Last, but not Least…
Hose that puppy down! There is no need to use a high pressure hose as that can knock things loose. A regular garden hose will do, with light to moderate water pressure. After hosing down your engine, you can let it dry on its own for a bit, but make sure to wipe off the remaining moisture with a microfiber towel. A warm or hot engine will dry itself relatively quickly, but it will spot (kind of like what happens to the exterior when the sprinklers come on and you let it air dry). Don’t forget your before and after pictures…
